winter weddin collage

With winter weddings themes can be a lot of fun  If you love the snow (and you better for a winter wedding in Chicago) you may want to carry the snowy theme throughout, starting with invitations that sprinkle snow (confetti-like paper) when opened.  No doubt this will get the theme across quickly and let guests know you are embracing the Chicago wintertime elements.

winter2winter3Now, to paint the picture of a fairytale winter wedding…the ceremony would be filled with icy décor that is white and pure and creates a respectful ambience for the vows.  Here guests are greeted with a myriad of white flowers, candles, and fabric that creates a mystic ceremony setting.  A heavenly gospel choir entertains the crowd as guests are being seated.  The aisle and alter are dusted with glittered faux snow and white silk fabric swags the ceiling.  As the bride and groom embrace in the first kiss as husband and wife artificial snow or white feathers begin to falling from the ceiling and the couple marches down the aisle.  This sure put guests in the mood for a real party.  Later, the night can shine with reflective, mirror-like surfaces throughout such as a silver Mylar curtain behind the band, mirror-squares hanging on fishing-line behind the head table.

winter1Tables are dressed in sheer white linens customized with Swarovski crystals.  Tables can be topped with a glass cover.  Lounge furniture with fluffy pillows and coffee tables create cozy seating areas.  An abundance of candlelight, velvet fabrics, and comfortable furniture are great winter wedding accompaniments.  The room oozes with glitz…big spherical objects and stars hang from the ceiling at different levels.  This hanging decor is made out of flowers or crystals.

Following dinner the newlywed couple takes to the dance floor and snow falls from the ceiling (a surprise to the bride and groom, of course).  The dance floor is Plexiglas and is filled with clear fluid and faux snow – the movement of the dancing stirs it up – just like a snow globe.  And the sweet finale…a wedding cake would be a grand white confection dusted with coconut made to look like more of that favorite white stuff.

Winter can be a big “green light” for brides to wear all those fuzzy fashion accessories that all girls dream about:  fur (faux or real) shrugs in white, ivory, brown, or black can add to any wedding gown.  Furry boas can be festive and warm.  Even the bridesmaids can snuggle up to winter wedding fashion – bridal attendants can wear mufflers to warm their hands in lieu of carrying a bouquet.  Bridesmaids can wear high-heeled boots instead of shoes to help keep their feet dry and warm – and in unique fashion.  The guys can also get in on the action…. The groom and all his men can opt for velvet tuxedos in lieu of the standard garb.  Or the groom and his men can take a simpler approach to winter fashion and may just wear an ostrich feather in their tuxedo pocket versus a handkerchief.

winter plateWinter weddings can embrace the cozy time of year by offering comfort food and drinks like: trays of hot toddies instead of champagne trays; soup sips served in shot glasses along with passed hors d’ oeuvres; miniature grilled cheese sandwiches accompanied by a sipper of tomato soup for a first course, followed by and entrée of traditional family gathering favorites like stuffing and mashed potatoes with filet mignon or stuffed chicken breast.  Desserts can also wear the winter flare; hot chocolate with whip cream and marshmallows (and a splash of Bailey’s Irish Cream) can satisfy the sweet tooth in place of a dessert table or wedding cake.  A “make-your-own-s’mores” station is interactive and delicious.  This would winter plate 2include a long table of toppings including graham crackers, marshmallows, a  variety of decadent chocolates, caramels, fruit coulis, whipped cream, fresh berries, etc.  Guests can pick their s’more toppings and an action chef does the rest.  Winter food favors are fun too…they can range from individual hot chocolate packets stuffed inside thematic coffee mug to non-perils (the chocolate candy covered in white dots) in a cellophane bag.  For the real die-hard winter weather lovers – a snow cone is the perfect sweet treat to end a meal.

Thanksgiving In Chicago

thanksgiving

Whether you are planning on hosting Thanksgiving at your house or meeting the family at one of Chicago’s famous restaurants it takes careful planning to have a successful holiday event.  If you are planning to do Thanksgiving the old fashioned way you have to plan ahead.  A traditional Thanksgiving dinner can take takes to prepare.  You also have to carefully time the turkey, different types of potatoes, cranberry sauce, green beans, dinner rolls, and desserts to all be prepared on time.  If planning your cooking schedule is too overwhelming delegate some of the cooking to other friends and family members.

In case your busy schedule does not allow for a day in the kitchen, Chicago has a number of restaurants that will provide a meal that will not let family or friends leave hungry.

Bin 36 will be serving a delicious 3- course meal for a reasonable price.  At $45/adult and $19/children is one of the many options for a Chicago Thanksgiving.

Wedding Planner?

Thursday, November 19th, 2009

When this whole wedding planning shenanigans started, Mama Cloud and I decided that we were going to go it alone—just me and her on a big fat planning adventure. I like to think I’m pretty resourceful and persuasive when I want to be, and Mama Cloud is the most downright organized person I’ve ever encountered. I figured between the two of us we would have this wedding locked down and ready to go in no time. Trouble is, like mother like daughter; we are also both very emotional and very excited ladies. Emotional as in the tears come quick when we get upset, and excited like we have so many ideas and want to start making things happen quickly before thinking it all through (OK, I’m way worse than she is at both of these, but that is not the point…). It wasn’t far into our twenty one month journey (I’m sorry but I still cannot believe it was TWENTY ONE months, it seems like an eternity!) it was obvious that we were going to need some help, if not only just on the big day.

Enter Windy Jennings of Weddings By Windy (aka lifesaver and wedding goddess extraordinaire!). I really cannot say enough about this woman. If I were to write a review on her with a rating system it would be an A with so many plus signs afterward you would think she was paying me to say it (which of course she’s not, I just love her that much). She not only made me love her but also made me realize the value and importance of having a planner or coordinator for your wedding. We used Windy for her “partial coordination” package even though we set out looking for just day of services. I didn’t even know there was a middle level between DOCs and the whole shebang, but it turns out a lot of coordinators offer personalized packages to handle whatever small or large tasks you need help with.

For an overly emotional gal like myself this came in very handy when the tea room where I had signed a contract with to have my bridesmaid’s luncheon decided to go out of business without telling me. I got a very calm email from Windy letting me know she had seen the notice on their site and was already contacting them. Oh, and to make it that much better she had a few places already thought out that might work instead. Emotional bride over here would have been bawling her eyes out and screaming her head off if I had found the notice myself. Never mind the HUGE crisis that was averted at the wedding when I forgot to wear my garter and decided to just forget the whole toss completely. Little did I know that Mr. Cloud had big plans for the garter toss, and if someone did not go to my room and get it I would be ruining months of his planning. Windy, cool as a cucumber, responded that I should really have someone go get it because I wouldn’t want to regret missing the tradition and never once hinted what a frenzy I was sending everyone into. (I know, I am being very vague about the huge surprise, but I have to save something for recaps, people!)

My point is, be it big or small, a planner just might save your day (and sanity) in similar ways and I highly encourage every bride-to-be to find a planner to become your BFF, at least for the day, much like Windy had to become mine for a few weeks (whether she liked it or not :) ). Mama Cloud and I still agree that working a planner into the budget, even when we still didn’t want to admit we really needed one, is the best decision we ever made. Because really, the church lady just might not bother to fluff your veil right before you walk down the aisle. And more than any other day you need someone on your side fighting for your vision, or at least giving you a little fluff.

Big City Bride Chicago Wedding Planner would love to become your wedding  BFF.  :)
