With winter weddings themes can be a lot of fun If you love the snow (and you better for a winter wedding in Chicago) you may want to carry the snowy theme throughout, starting with invitations that sprinkle snow (confetti-like paper) when opened. No doubt this will get the theme across quickly and let guests know you are embracing the Chicago wintertime elements.

Now, to paint the picture of a fairytale winter wedding…the ceremony would be filled with icy décor that is white and pure and creates a respectful ambience for the vows. Here guests are greeted with a myriad of white flowers, candles, and fabric that creates a mystic ceremony setting. A heavenly gospel choir entertains the crowd as guests are being seated. The aisle and alter are dusted with glittered faux snow and white silk fabric swags the ceiling. As the bride and groom embrace in the first kiss as husband and wife artificial snow or white feathers begin to falling from the ceiling and the couple marches down the aisle. This sure put guests in the mood for a real party. Later, the night can shine with reflective, mirror-like surfaces throughout such as a silver Mylar curtain behind the band, mirror-squares hanging on fishing-line behind the head table.
Tables are dressed in sheer white linens customized with Swarovski crystals. Tables can be topped with a glass cover. Lounge furniture with fluffy pillows and coffee tables create cozy seating areas. An abundance of candlelight, velvet fabrics, and comfortable furniture are great winter wedding accompaniments. The room oozes with glitz…big spherical objects and stars hang from the ceiling at different levels. This hanging decor is made out of flowers or crystals.
Following dinner the newlywed couple takes to the dance floor and snow falls from the ceiling (a surprise to the bride and groom, of course). The dance floor is Plexiglas and is filled with clear fluid and faux snow – the movement of the dancing stirs it up – just like a snow globe. And the sweet finale…a wedding cake would be a grand white confection dusted with coconut made to look like more of that favorite white stuff.

Winter can be a big “green light” for brides to wear all those fuzzy fashion accessories that all girls dream about: fur (faux or real) shrugs in white, ivory, brown, or black can add to any wedding gown. Furry boas can be festive and warm. Even the bridesmaids can snuggle up to winter wedding fashion – bridal attendants can wear mufflers to warm their hands in lieu of carrying a bouquet. Bridesmaids can wear high-heeled boots instead of shoes to help keep their feet dry and warm – and in unique fashion. The guys can also get in on the action…. The groom and all his men can opt for velvet tuxedos in lieu of the standard garb. Or the groom and his men can take a simpler approach to winter fashion and may just wear an ostrich feather in their tuxedo pocket versus a handkerchief.

Winter weddings can embrace the cozy time of year by offering comfort food and drinks like: trays of hot toddies instead of champagne trays; soup sips served in shot glasses along with passed hors d’ oeuvres; miniature grilled cheese sandwiches accompanied by a sipper of tomato soup for a first course, followed by and entrée of traditional family gathering favorites like stuffing and mashed potatoes with filet mignon or stuffed chicken breast. Desserts can also wear the winter flare; hot chocolate with whip cream and marshmallows (and a splash of Bailey’s Irish Cream) can satisfy the sweet tooth in place of a dessert table or wedding cake. A “make-your-own-s’mores” station is interactive and delicious. This would
include a long table of toppings including graham crackers, marshmallows, a variety of decadent chocolates, caramels, fruit coulis, whipped cream, fresh berries, etc. Guests can pick their s’more toppings and an action chef does the rest. Winter food favors are fun too…they can range from individual hot chocolate packets stuffed inside thematic coffee mug to non-perils (the chocolate candy covered in white dots) in a cellophane bag. For the real die-hard winter weather lovers – a snow cone is the perfect sweet treat to end a meal.
